PHNOM PENH - The price of rat meat has quadrupled in Cambodia this year as inflation has put other meat beyond the reach of poor people, officials said on Wednesday.With consumer price inflation at 37 percent according to the latest central bank estimate, demand has pushed a kilogram of rat meat up to around 5,000 riel ($1.28) from 1,200 riel last year.Spicy field rat dishes with garlic thrown in have become particularly popular at a time when beef costs 20,000 riel a kg.Officials said rats were fleeing to higher ground from flooded areas of the lower Mekong Delta, making it easier for villagers to catch them."Many children are happy making some money from selling the animals to the markets, but they keep some for their family," Ly Marong, an agriculture official, said by telephone from the Koh Thom district on the border with Vietnam."Not only are our poor eating it, but there is also demand from Vietnamese living on the border with us."He estimated that Cambodia supplied more than a tonne of live rats a day to Vietnam.Rats are also eaten widely in Thailand, while a state government in eastern India this month encouraged its people to eat rats in an effort to battle soaring food prices and save grain stocks.

goodbye mike...

a friend had just passed away last saturday, leaving this world too early and in terrible pain.

my friend mike, is one of my closest since my younger years. we grew together, share jokes and games together...tumbang preso, patintero, agawang base, name it, we play almost all the games the children would love to do during our early years...we...our friends, boy, london, erick, ediboy, would go out as early as 7 am on the streets, start our day playing and would end by dinner time. As if we could not continue playing the next day. we swim in floods during rainy season, we catch dragonflies during summer days and we even play 'gera-gerahan' with some baby rockets during new years eve. those were the days. the happy part of life. where we dint even bother eating lunch, dinner or taking a bath in a very humid day of play in the streets.

last saturday, mike was killed in a vehicular accident, he was plowed 5 meters away from where he was standing. the suspect, a-22 yr old wreck less drunk kid, enjoying his youth with carelessness...not thinking of consequences of his action, leaving a family, a pregnant wife and a very innocent son, mike passed away a few minutes after midnight.

its too hard for us, his family and friends to accept his fate.

but one thing is for sure... we know for a fact that indeed he has a good heart, mike now rests in the hands of our creator. leaving a grieving heart, leaving us all with hope of accepting what had happend to him should never be forgotten and opening our minds with what would possibly make us all remember him for his generous smile he often give us...his friends...his hopes and his simple life with big aspirations and desire of happiness.
